The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has proposed an increase of 10 cents for single fares for adults and youth. This is the first increase since 2020, and it has drawn criticism from commuters, who are already unhappy with the current state of public transit in the city. The proposed increase is part of the TTC’s 2023 budget plan, which also includes extended maximum wait times, reduced service, and increased crowding.
As of April 3, 2023, the new single fare for adults and youth will be $3.35, up from the current $3.25. However, fares for seniors, Fair Pass Transit Discount Program users, and monthly pass customers will remain the same as they have been since 2019.
The increase in fare is due to the increase in the cost of running the TTC. The city’s subsidy to the TTC in the 2023 budget now stands at $958.7 million, marking a 5.85% or $53 million increase over the 2022 approved budget. The TTC has also proposed improvements to the system, including new routes, more frequent service, and increased accessibility.
While the fare increase may be unpopular with commuters, it is necessary to maintain and improve public transit in the city. The TTC is a vital service that connects people to work, school, and other essential services. It is essential that the TTC continues to receive the necessary funding to provide reliable and efficient transit for all Torontonians.
